Bagdogra to Gangtok: private taxi, helicopter or shared jeep?

4 min read Updated Written by our drivers

The short answer

A private taxi from Bagdogra Airport to Gangtok costs ₹3,500 for the car, takes 4.5 to 5 hours and drops you at your hotel. The state helicopter is about ₹3,100 a seat for a 35-minute flight, one departure a day, 7 kg of luggage and no flights in cloud. A shared jeep from Siliguri is ₹400 to ₹600 a seat, leaves when ten seats are full and ends at the Deorali stand below town.

Private taxi: the default for two or more

For two people a private sedan at ₹3,500 works out around ₹1,750 a head, less than the helicopter and with no luggage limit, no transfer at either end and no weather risk. The driver is at arrivals when you land, the fare includes tolls, parking and GST, and you stop where you like: the Coronation Bridge, the Teesta at Melli, lunch at Rangpo. A Bagdogra Airport to Gangtok taxi is booked in a minute with a 20% advance.

Helicopter: fast, scenic, and often grounded

The Sikkim Tourism Development Corporation runs a shared helicopter between Bagdogra and Gangtok’s Burtuk helipad, one flight a day each way, about 35 minutes. The state fare was cut to around ₹3,100 a seat in late 2025; private operators resell seats at ₹3,500 to ₹5,500. The catch is the weather: flights are cancelled in cloud, which is most monsoon mornings and many winter afternoons, and you then need a taxi anyway. Luggage is limited to about 7 kg per person, so larger bags go by road.

Helicopter fares and timings are the operator’s, not ours, and change without notice. Confirm with STDC before you rely on a flight. Last checked 24 October 2026.

Shared jeep: the budget option from Siliguri

Shared Sumos and Boleros run from the Siliguri jeep stands near Siliguri Junction and from NJP to Gangtok through the morning, at ₹400 to ₹600 a seat depending on season. They leave when all ten seats are sold, run until early afternoon, and end at the Deorali taxi stand below Gangtok, where a local cab takes you up to your hotel for ₹200 to ₹300. From Bagdogra Airport you first need a taxi or bus to the stand (14 km). Good value for one traveller with a small bag and no fixed timing; tiring with children or after a long flight.

Which should you choose?

  • Two or more people, or any luggage: private taxi. It is the cheapest per head from a pair upwards and the only option that ends at your hotel.
  • Solo on a budget with a small bag: shared jeep, if you land before noon.
  • Clear-sky season (October to December, March to May) and you want the view: helicopter one way, taxi back, with a taxi held as the fallback.
  • Landing after 2 pm: taxi. The last jeeps and the helicopter have gone.
